ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces conventional material forming and joining processes, thus highlighting the importance of sustainability in manufacturing. The sustainability issues in welding come in the form of optimized process parameters, selection of electrode material, shielding gas usage and recycling, flux usage and removal, and efficient melting or non-melting of base materials. The core of the sustainable and green concept is to develop manufacturing processes, raw materials, computing methods, and policies, including recycling and waste management strategies, pollution control methods, and efficient business development, all aiming at optimum use of resources without creating environmental pollution in any form, while reducing waste. The sustainability elements are to be quantified based on the requirement of the consumer and manufacturer. In the case of manufacturing processes, the sustainability involves elements such as manufacturing cost, power and energy consumption, waste minimization, personal health, work safety, and eco-friendliness, along with the interaction effect.
