ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two widely used approaches such as Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) and system dynamics modeling. The basic idea behind ISM is to incorporate practical expertise of experts to decompose a complex system into several subsystems and develop a structural model with multiple levels to depict the dominant factors associated with implementation of sustainable manufacturing. ISM has several applications in sustainable manufacturing such as analysis of factors for sustainable product development, sustainability implementation in small and big size organizations, sustainable supply chains and environmentally conscious manufacture. Structural Equation Modeling also has potential application in the context of sustainable design, manufacturing, and determination of relation between sustainable manufacturing indicators and organizational performance. Applications of sustainable development are widespread across areas such as manufacturing, healthcare, construction and agriculture. Sustainability performance measurement ensures effectiveness of the planned sustainability improvement activities. Sustainable development enables decision-making by merging environmental and economy factors.
