ABSTRACT
In the modern era of technological development, the main emphasis for sustainable manufacturing is focused on selection of materials, manufacturing processes, and recycling or reuse of materials that ultimately leads to environmental sustainability. A good sustainable manufacturing strategy will focus on: promote social well-being, ensure economic stability, minimize resource depletion, and minimize environmental degradation. Sustainable manufacturing has become an integral part of global economy and plays a critical role in the modern life. Sustainable manufacturing has emerged as a globally recognized mandate and it includes green or environment-friendly manufacturing practices that facilitate the self-healing and self-replenishing capability of natural ecosystems. With limited resources and serious environmental impacts, it is obvious that a more sustainable life style will become more and more important. Selection of materials plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of manufacturing a product. Industrial ecology, eco-efficiency, and green chemistry are guiding the development of the next-generation materials, products, and processes.
