ABSTRACT

Tata Steel, one of the major steel companies, defines sustainability as “an enduring and balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility, and societal benefit”. The economic growth of a nation is dependent on the consumption of steel. Since the industrial revolution in the 18th century, steel has been a material of choice across various industrial segments, e.g., automotive, packaging, energy production, tools, and healthcare. Steel is consumed in different segments—predominately in the construction segment. Once steel is produced, it becomes an everlasting product as it is 100% recyclable. However, there are three major challenges that emerge from the steel consumption projections, especially for the developing countries. All major steel companies have institutionalized measures to minimize and reduce the emission foot print. Steel plants usually employ a holistic environmental management system to monitor and improve its environmental performance and increase its operational efficiency. The steel industry continuously strives to use by-product gases from coke ovens, blast furnaces, and basic oxygen furnaces.
