ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an interview of Judge Marilyn Mornington, a District Judge in the UK working mainly in the Wigan area. She was the first woman to be appointed as a District Judge in the UK in 1994. In addition to being a judge she is a passionate advocate in promoting wider diversity among the judiciary where she is not only a member of the Judicial Diversity Board, but is the UK Ambassador for Diversity in Public Life. The interview was recorded face to face in her chambers at the District Court in Wigan in March 2016. The Judicature Act 1873 established the High Court and Court of Appeal for England and Wales where under the Criminal Appeal Act 1907 the Court of Appeal was split into two with the establishment of the Court of Appeal Criminal Division. What came across strongly during the interview is that Judge Mornington still sees the importance of the vocational side to her work.
