ABSTRACT

The availability and access to internet-based content and simulation and analytical tools provide a tremendous advantage to online instruction geared towards distance learning education in engineering via online teaching methods. Teaching of engineering courses can be enhanced in online delivery mode by providing students with resources that can be easily accessible at any time. This chapter provides discussion about advantages and limitations of technology-enhanced learning by the use of online tools in civil engineering education. Review of the potential utility of tools available on the internet for teaching basic data analysis and engineering optimization courses is provided in this chapter. The limitations of online tools for enhancing student learning and instruction are also discussed. The chapter also critically examines how learning can be supported by technology instead of driven by it and how distance learning in engineering can be supported by online content.
