ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the current state of the evidence for the most promising or predominant nutraceuticals used for skin health today. Plant polyphenols as nutraceuticals may become increasingly relevant for their use as alternatives or adjunct treatments to topical sunscreens. The use of nutraceuticals to support skin health as antioxidant sun protection may be of benefit particularly in patients at risk for skin cancer or suffering from pigmentary disorders that are exacerbated by sun exposure. The future of nutraceuticals in the management of skin diseases, skin health, and anti-aging is promising, but significant resources need to be contributed to further study regarding safety, dosing, drug interactions, bioavailability, and sourcing. Moreover, specific brands and origins or supplements and nutraceuticals ought to be considered to ensure proper dosing, improve effectiveness, and allow for improved monitoring and moderation of side effects and interactions.
