ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explain the effect of sociocultural community context, whether in terms of local, national or global community, in relation to the implementation of the cultural educational program and the development of national characteristics at SMP Negeri 1 Singaraja school. In particular, this study aimed to explain the practices of instilling national characteristic values through the school educational program and in the specific subject of social studies. This study used an educational ethno-graphic research design. The data analysis in this study was done by adopting a qualitative approach. The results showed: (1) how the sociocultural contexts of the Balinese, at the level of local, national and global community, provide the foundations for implementing an educational program that is oriented to the development of national characteristic values; (2) that social studies provides important strategies for cultural education and the development of national characteristics; (3) how the creation of an educational climate in the school and social education that is based on the wisdoms and values of the local Balinese community can produce a young generation of Balinese with Indonesian national character.
