ABSTRACT

Chapter 11, “How Voluntary Programs and Other Initiatives Can Improve Performance and Lead to Reductions in Environmental Risk,” addresses the history of EPA’s efforts to implement more innovative, effective, and efficient approaches to solving environmental problems, including ongoing efforts to reduce pollution. The authors review EPA’s Environmental Leadership Program, Project XL, EPA’s pilot program for industry waste reduction and compliance initiatives, the Common Sense Initiative, ClimateWise, the Merit Partnership for Pollution Prevention, Green Power Partnership, Center for Corporate Climate Leadership, WasteWise, State and Local Programs, and finally, the effectiveness of the Voluntary Programs.
