ABSTRACT

Chapter 3, “Preventing and Mitigating Environmental Liabilities with Environmental Management Systems,” investigates the economic, social, political, technological, ideological, and financial benefits—as well as the internal and external costs—of implementing an environmental management system. It also provides guidance for organizations looking to conduct their own cost/benefit analysis. This chapter outlines the advantages of certification within a number of specific industries, namely general manufacturing, chemical manufacturing, electronic equipment and component manufacturing, service industries, and health and pharmaceuticals. In addition, principles, methods, and strategies for effective environmental communications are explored. These topics include participatory and nonparticipatory business communications, internal and external risk communications, environmental labeling, and environmental reporting.
