ABSTRACT

Chapter 8, “Environmental Risk Management Systems,” describes the core principles and elements of an effective environmental management system (EMS) aimed at managing environmental risk and sustainability. This discussion draws on many models, criteria, and policies, including those developed by governmental authorities, business management practices, and nongovernmental organizations such as ISO 14001. A central theme is that there is no single best model for an EMS and that an effective EMS must be tailored to the specific context, culture, and needs of the implementing organization.
