ABSTRACT

Ever since their introduction, flexible fiberscopes have revolutionized the management of difficult airway cases. The flexible fiber-optic endoscope is considered the gold standard in treating difficult airway management. It is also included in the American Society of Anesthesiologists Difficult Airway Algorithm. The fiber-optic guided intubation can be done either awake or under general anesthesia. However, the technique is complex and requires experience. In patients with cervical spine injuries, fiber-optic intubation must be performed with minimal or no movement of the spine. This chapter focuses on the parts of fiberscopes, the techniques of airway blocks, and the practical aspects of fiber-optic guided endotracheal intubation.
