ABSTRACT

The burr hole procedure is the basic armamentarium of any neurosurgical procedure. It is the first step to elevation of the cranial flap for any craniotomy or craniectomy. Basic knowledge of the applied anatomy, its indications and contraindications, a stepwise approach, perioperative care, and management of the perioperative complications not only helps the neurosurgeon but also helps a basic critical care physician or surgeon to intervene at least in emergency, lifesaving conditions, such as extra axial hematomas and increased intracranial pressure (ICP).
