ABSTRACT

Tracheostomy is defined as the creation of an opening in the trachea by suturing the skin of the neck to the tracheal mucosa. This chapter discusses the relevant anatomy of the trachea and various indications and contraindications for tracheostomy. The procedure is described in a stepwise manner. Different techniques of tracheostomy have been described along with care of the tracheostomy and the possible complications following the procedure. The chapter highlights the recent guidelines and recommendations for carrying out a tracheostomy.
