ABSTRACT

Subdural hematomas (SDHs) are one of the most common neurosurgical disorders requiring surgical intervention. The compressive effect on the brain produces localizing neurologic signs, signs of increased intracranial pressure, and an alteration in level of consciousness. Timing and the nature of neurosurgical intervention in a patient with subdural hematomas depends on multiple factors, including the size of the clots, the patient’s age, and the location of the hematoma, in addition to the medical and neurologic condition of the patient. Surgery may be urgently required, yet even emergency surgery does not guarantee a satisfactory outcome. This chapter discusses the various treatment modalities and interventions along with supportive and symptomatic care.
