ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses common themes and lessons from the global stories of collaboration and transformation. In the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), there is enough trust among the people of Yap Island, through decades of experience and accomplishment together, to allow for an expanding collaboration among not just the people of FSM but also the US Forest Service, Conservation International, the Micronesia Conservation Trust, and others. Yet, there is a need for additional technical and scientific expertise, which can be an opportunity in such situations, as this need helps to catalyze new collaborative linkages with those who have the expertise. A key factor for success in northern Vietnam is effective community-based projects, where people from local communities are fully responsible for preparing and caring for mangroves, including everything from the planting, to protection, to long-term maintenance, and to social awareness of why community-based projects are important to everyone.
