ABSTRACT

Meteorologists are trained professionals with expertise in weather who typically view themselves as public servants. They have a mission to study the atmosphere and climate and help people prepare for the weather of the day so they can decide whether to take an umbrella, wear warmer clothes, or pull out the sunglasses. In more dangerous situations such as severe weather, meteorologists can be hailed as heroes or failures. Most forecasters have a passion for communicating information and using the best technology possible to help them disseminate critical weather information to their communities. The audience has high expectations for the person who has that power. They are quickly mocked or scorned when they are wrong, but they are deservedly praised if a family walks out safely after a tornado destroyed their home.
