ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with reviewing scholarly work that examines how music and visual messaging can impact viewing audiences in a variety of contexts. It explains the sonic and visual elements and identifies the casualty-related themes where Daesh employed sonic/visual reinforcement. The chapter identifies video fragments with the potential to serve as instances of multimodal message reinforcement. It utilizes the starting and ending point of each accompanying nashid to avoid potential loss of useful data that might fall outside of the parameters of the full video’s most emphasized topic. The chapter examines video footage that appeared immediately before and after each multimodal segment. It describes the visual and sonic content of the dataset, including the identity, prevalence, and source of the specific anashid and then reveals Daesh’s strategic use of themes as identified by the group’s usage of sonic and visual redundancy. The chapter concludes by discussing the findings and identifying fruitful areas of future study.
