ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the nature of complex systems and why the development of visionarios—system maps and stories—helps to explore those systems for better understanding of their idiosyncrasies and characteristics. In a world of complexity, there are many lessons to be learned from the development and use of viruses such as Stuxnet and Shamoon. The chapter also discusses cyber-weapons that are potential tools of terrorists. The “disruption” can occur using kinetics, such as a suicide bomber, or in the case of cybercrime or cyber-terrorism, more subtle tools such as ransomware to blackmail victims. System maps are very useful tools to begin to understand the complexity of a system’s operational environment. System maps are very useful tools to begin to understand the complexity of a system’s operational environment. The “string” boundaries of the Cynefin framework, that separate the four elements are not matrix boundaries, but levels of order that reflect degrees of complexity.
