ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the management of steroids and secondary steroid effects on orthopedic treatment interventions. It does so in light of emerging research on the gastrointestinal mucosa as a key regulator of autoimmune arthritis. Corticosteroids are key regulators of whole-body homeostasis. The effects of corticosteroids are widespread, including profound alterations in carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism, and the modulation of electrolyte and water balance. Corticosteroids are key regulators of whole-body homeostasis. The effects of corticosteroids are widespread, including profound alterations in carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism, and the modulation of electrolyte and water balance. Dietary and nutritional interventions have become an important aspect of patient care in all specialties. The current rise in obesity as a global epidemic will increase health care costs, morbidity and premature mortality across a wide patient population if changes are not reversed. The chapter applies the research to clinical rheumatology and concludes with a case study.
