ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in this book. This is a textbook for students, rather than a monograph or research-based book. The goal is to describe how the system works, including a strong focus on practical operational aspects; to provide students with a number of frameworks that give context to the system; and, finally, to demonstrate some tools for analysis of some of the main problems associated with intermodal transport systems. Much more information on the practical aspects of operations is available online, and students are encouraged to search online for more images of equipment and videos of operations, such as loading and unloading. It also focuses on the practical aspects of intermodal transport, beginning with an overview of the main vehicle and equipment types used in the industry. The book further introduces some methods of analysis of an intermodal system.
