ABSTRACT

Teaching data analytics techniques can be a challenge. Learning the tools, understanding the algorithms, and correctly interpreting results can all given students difficulty, and instructors can often miss cues that indicate that students are struggling. Using the learning theories of formative and summative assessment, we can engage in a series of instruction and verification to help more learners acquire the knowledge we are trying to impart. This chapter illustrates how to use formative and summative assessment in the context of a data analytics lesson on association rules. With simple examples and explanations, and hands-on activities that the reader can follow, the chapter provides a step-by-step guide to what association rules are, how they work, and how to build them and interpret their results. Within the context of this guide, both formative and summative assessments are provided to help the reader understand how to use these instructional techniques to more effectively teach data analytics (or anything else)!
