ABSTRACT

The artificial or constructed wetlands have been widely used since their first large-scale application in the late 1960s. Taking into account the low costs, the easy operation and maintenance, and their environment friendly methods, the constructed wetlands could be considered as a green treatment technology; when simulating the natural wetland processes the systems have a great versatility to treat various types of wastewater. The physicochemical properties such as solubility and partition coefficients soil/water and octanol/water become relevant at the time of studying removals. The National Water Study in Colombia established that the livestock sector alone uses 8.5% of the total water used in this country. Manure waste from livestock activities can be incorporated into the crop soil as composting or through a liquid preparation that is sprayed on crop fields. The livestock farm was located in the rural area of Cordoba Department, near the facilities of the University of Cordoba, where pilot systems of artificial or constructed wetland were installed.
