ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the effects that electromagnetic fields (EMFs), in the frequency range up to 300 GHz and including static fields, can and do have on behavior and cognition. The effects of strong static electric fields on the human body are summarized in Karipids. In terms of predatory behavior of certain fish species, the ability to sense electric fields is particularly important. In medical imaging, humans are being exposed to progressively higher field strengths. The ability of organisms to detect the Earth's field and subtle changes in it can be found across all phyla. Intense extremely low frequency electric fields are sensed through motion of hairs on the skin and strong magnetic fields through the production of retinal phosphenes. The effect of bringing about a change in magnetic field in a medium is to induce an electric field in that medium. A number of investigators have studied the effects of RF fields on direction-finding abilities of migrato.
