ABSTRACT

The efficacy of an herbal medicinal products (HMP) is the extent to which it improves health and contributes to wellbeing. One pertinent issue to safeguard public health includes the quality, efficacy, safety and toxicity of herbal medicine, given that there is a paucity of data surrounding these concerns. The relationship between humans and plants dates back to antiquity. Man has always been curious by nature and passionate about plants. When compared to conventional medicines, there are limited studies conducted on the quality, efficacy, safety, herb–drug interactions and herbal side effects of herbal medicines. According to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, all herbs are considered dietary supplements in the United States. Herbal medicine should be treated as a drug rather than food. It should be acknowledged that despite being natural, HMPs can exert plausible side and adverse effects, including herb–drug and drug–drug interactions.
