ABSTRACT

The Ayurvedic medicinal system is one of the oldest healthcare systems in the world, promoting a holistic view of health, utilising the synergistic properties of organic resources and prescribing individualised treatments, rather than the more accepted single target, single treatment management. The holistic approach of the Ayurvedic medicinal system utilises the unique benefits of multiple extracts in polyherbal formulations. The use of Bacopa monnieri dates back to sixth century CE, with its name mentioned on ancient parchments and touted as a medhya rasayana, an intervention for the relief of mental deficiencies. Preclinical research has been able to establish the efficacy of Bacopa in improving the learning, memory and memory retention of rats. Bacopa has a history of improving mental functions in clinical and non-clinical populations. The Nootropic and Adaptogenic evidence indicates that chronic use of Bacopa may provide significant benefits to cognitive outcomes associated with memory in child and adolescent populations.
