ABSTRACT

The Cannabis plant, which may be of different species or variants of the same species, is a dioecious entity that contains a number of unique resorcinol metabolites, although the estimated number may vary from 60–110. The use of cannabis and cannabinoids for medical conditions has become more popularised around the world. There is growing evidence that cannabis and cannabinoids are efficacious for several health conditions, such as chronic pain, spasticity, nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. Several reports, including P. Whiting et al. and Cochrane reviews, concluded that all trials suggested a greater benefit for cannabinoids and their being more efficacious than the placebo and similar to conventional anti-emetics in treating chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. When the plant ages, the amount of cannabinoid has been found to generally increase, reaching the highest level at the budding stage and achieving a plateau before the onset of senescence.
