ABSTRACT

Nature has provided amazing resources for the treatment and cure of diseases for centuries. Mankind have always been dependant on nature for its primary healthcare and wellness solutions. Kerala has a strong network of public specialised hospitals, hospitals and primary healthcare centres – both in modern medicine, Ayurveda and other systems of medicine, which offer highly subsidised medical care for the population. Traditional medicine is widely followed worldwide, especially in two major populous countries – India and China. The Kerala healthcare model is a case in point for the relevance of traditional medicine in public healthcare management. Clinical protocols and scientific validation often thrust upon traditional medicines and systems are guidelines followed by the modern systems of medicine. Nature is the biggest treasure trove of medicines and can offer solutions for the effective management of preventive and lifestyle disease management, which imposes a big challenge in public healthcare.
