ABSTRACT

The memory-enhancing effects of Bacopa monnieri are attributed to the presence of triterpenoid saponins called ‘Bacosides’. Bacopa extract has the problem of poor solubility and hence has less bioavailability. To enhance solubility and bioavailability of poorly soluble bacoside a self nano-emulsifying drug delivery system was tried using different oils, surfactants and co surfactants. A new lipophilic formulation of Bacopa monnieri with phosphatidylcholine was therefore prepared. The new lipophilic formulation was evaluated for its penetration in the brain and pharmacokinetic profile in rats. Poor solubility, patient compliance and bitterness were a major driving forces to develop taste masked ß-cyclodextrin complexed Bacognize, which disperses very quickly. The film coating technique as adapted to protect it from moisture and other parameters. Bacognize was further tested according to in-house parameters for standardisation. Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative condition mainly affecting the elderly population. The cause and pathogenesis of this disease is uncertain.
