ABSTRACT

Chongqing is bisected by the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers, into three parts: Nanan in the south, Yuzhong in the middle and Jiangbei in the north. The Twin River Bridges are two cable-supported girder bridges: the Dongshuimen Bridge crosses the Yangtze River from Nanan to Yuzhong, while the Qianximen Bridge crosses the Jialing River from Yuzhong to Jiangbei. A tunnel under the entire Yuzhong District connects the two bridges. The bridge site offers the best vantage point of the City, so aesthetics were critically important for the design. The bridges carry four lanes of city traffic and two rapid transit tracks with very stringent design requirements. The girders are steel truss structures with orthotropic plates and the towers are made of concrete. The bridges were designed based on the concept of partially cable-supported girder bridge. This paper describes the development of two alternative design concepts and the final construction of these bridges.
