ABSTRACT

Many bridges in Japan had been built from 1950 to 1995, indicating that most of them have been in service more than 50 years. Corrosion has one of the most deleterious effects on steel structures, and this makes maintenance of steel bridges seriously problematic. It is necessary to establish rational criteria in order to accurately predict the residual strength and remaining life of existing steel structures. The objective of this research is to propose a simple expression that can identify the residual strength of steel plate members in compression.
