ABSTRACT

Gonorrhoea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a Gram-negative coccus. It is one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted disease. NAATs are reliable and fast in making a diagnosis of gonorrhoea. Gonorrhoea is often asymptomatic in women, so partner screening is imperative. Pregnancy test and full genitourinary screen including an HIV test are warranted in patients being treated for N. gonorrhoeae. Ceftriaxone is the drug of choice, but resistance is an emerging concern.
