ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the foundations of trust based on a critical literature review and to propose future research in this area. The process of building and maintaining trust is very important in organizations. Trust is multidimensional and complex, which is why there are so many propositions in the literature for different types of trust. Trust affects many areas of organizational life in a positive way, for example, it stimulates collaboration, it enables creating relationships, it facilitates management coordination among different organizational units, and it improves the organizational climate. Many researchers and practitioners have explored the significance of trust in the organization. Trust also mitigates uncertainty about partner behavior. The dynamics of trust enhancement are a very important topic of research. Institution-based trust is related to institutions, cultural, and societal norms and with the trustor's feeling of security related to guarantees, regulations, or the legal system.
