ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the education given to people with intellectual disabilities and hearing impairments in Spain. The idea is to offer neither a simple descriptive account of what has transpired in the education of people with intellectual disabilities and hearing impairments in Spain throughout this time period, nor an erudite exercise on policies, facts, and people. The response of society to disability, educational, and care point of view has undergone an enormous transformation throughout history. In Spain, the welfare model dominated the approach toward people with ID up to the end of the 1940s. During this period, people with disabilities were mostly isolated from society in private homes or housed in large care centres or asylums. The initiatives undoubtedly had a positive impact on the lives of people with intellectual disability. There were many aspects to the medical model and many variables in the family and social context that all influenced the lives of people with intellectual disability.
