ABSTRACT
Diagnosis/Definition Diabetes mellitus (DM) is defined as a metabolic abnormality characterized by elevated circulating glucose. The diagnoses of diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance outside of pregnancy are established on the basis of formal laboratory criteria (Table 4.1) [1-4]. As different countries use either mmol/L or mg/dL for glucose values, a comparison is provided (Table 4.2).
