ABSTRACT
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND TRANSMISSION T. pallidum is a gram-negative spirochete unable to survive outside the human host and therefore has never been grown in culture. Unlike most other infectious diseases, it is rarely if ever diagnosed by isolation and characterization of the causative organism. T. pallidum can survive in the human host for several decades.
