ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of research and recommendations concerning the role of physical activity in the health and wellbeing of older adults. It reviews some of the benefits that accrue to older individuals who adopt a physically active lifestyle. The chapter provides the guidelines regarding the frequency, intensity, duration, and type of physical activity recommended for older adults. It focuses on evidence-based strategies to help motivate older adults to initiate and maintain a physically active lifestyle. The chapter discusses how health professionals should talk to older adults about physical activity, focusing on the need to help them learn how to “be active their way". As part of a comprehensive behavioral strategy, tailoring the exercise program to the needs and interest of participants has successfully motivated older adults to initiate and maintain a routine of regular physical activity. The chapter concludes by providing answers to frequently asked questions about physical activity.
