ABSTRACT

Physical activity (PA) research has led to many developments in the understanding of the benefits of activity in prevention, risk reduction, and improvements in health. Regular PA can play a major role in weight control, risk reduction for cardiovascular disease and diabetes and prediabetes, and some cancers. A major influence on current PA trends and research approaches is the rapidly expanding access to technology for the monitoring of activity. The last decade has seen an acceleration of studies and intervention programs utilizing the World Wide Web to promote PA. Reviews of both PA and Sedentary behavior interventions continue to highlight the need for additional studies that include racial and ethnic minority and underserved samples. An additional approach to addressing the needs of the broader community when developing PA interventions is to consider the role of the built environment and neighborhood.
