ABSTRACT

The stress response and the relaxation response are innate protective and adaptive responses that initiate physiological and biochemical reactions in the body. The stress response can become harmful with prolonged exposure, but the relaxation response can help reverse the effects of allostatic load. The stress response is characterized by increased oxygen utilization, increased glucose uptake, and increased respiratory rate. Resilience is a dynamic trait that reflects an individual’s ability to cultivate adaptive behaviors, thereby counteracting the negative effects of stress and returning to a state of well-being. Gratitude is also shown to build resilience. It is a key strategy for adaptation to stress and helps achieve progressive growth in the face of stress. Building a positive perspective is a critical process in the management of stress and conditions caused or exacerbated by stress. Proper nutrition is an important pillar of well-being; however, stressful stimuli can cause healthy eating habits to crumble.
