ABSTRACT

Medical Nutrition Therapy provided by a registered dietitian nutritionist is a critical evidence-based intervention for patients with diabetes. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) accounts for approximately 5% of diagnosed diabetes and is due to cellular-mediated autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta-cells, usually leading to absolute insulin deficiency. Persons with T1D must perform self-monitoring of blood glucose to guide treatment decisions. The prevalence of clinically significant psychosocial/emotional disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and disordered eating behaviors in people with diabetes require screening and referrals for treatment. Disordered eating behaviors should be considered when hyperglycemia and weight loss are unexplained based on self-reported behaviors related to medication dosing, the Eating Plan, and physical activity. Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support as well as psychosocial care should be provided for all patients with diabetes as part of a collaborative, patient-centered approach. Education and counseling for lifestyle therapies for both prediabetes and diabetes begins by developing a good rapport with the patient.
