ABSTRACT

Strategies for applying structured lifestyle interventions to improve dysglycemic states must be relevant and then actionable as implementation tactics. This chapter examines the implementation of best principles in type 2 diabetes (T2D) care through the lens of clinical narratives to curate experiential and evidentiary information, and presents an expert array of how-to guidelines on program building, particularly for secondary and tertiary nutritional prevention strategies. Programs that address the lifestyle dimensions of T2D may occur in a variety of settings, the most expensive being the live-in programs and the least expensive being the self-help books. The 100% whole food and plant-based diet has been explored in the treatment of T2D. The evidence favors considering, offering, and even implementing a whole plant-based diet in patients with T2D, based on thorough discussions with the patient. Standard T2D dietary advice often seeks to limit intake of some plant products because of high glycemic load issues.
