ABSTRACT

Physical activity contributes to the prevention of weight gain and incidence of obesity, and it is an important lifestyle behavior to facilitate long-term weight loss maintenance. The benefits of resistance exercise in the treatment of obesity may not be in reductions in total body fatness, but rather improvements in lean mass and strength, and the reductions in abdominal adiposity. Yoga has many different styles and components that need to be considered when determining the efficacy of yoga within the context of body weight and obesity prevention and treatment. Sedentary behavior is considered an important lifestyle target to reduce health risk. Evidence from studies of adults who are overweight or obese, which included diet modification to reduce energy intake, also suggests that targeting sedentary behavior may have limited influence on weight loss. Bariatric surgery has become a popular, and effective, method in the treatment of obesity.
