ABSTRACT

232Flag smut caused by Urocystis agropyri is a seed and soilborne disease of wheat and capable of losses in situations where farmers’ uses their own produced seeds without proper seed treatment. The disease is favored under sandy light soil conditions and cooler temperature. The infected plants may not develop spikes and thus disease may cause losses up to 100%. The telio- spores remain viable in soil up to seven years and therefore crop rotation may play important role in management. Use of fungicidal seed treatment effectively manages the disease in case of susceptible wheat cultivars in cooler climate.
