ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how advances in the omics sciences, biotechnology, and data science will enable clinician-scientists to engage with patients and implement timely and effective interventions to improve patient outcomes. It provides a framework for delivering actionable healthcare information. The chapter defines different omics technologies, provides opportunities for training, and describes efforts to form large, multidisciplinary, productive, and collaborative teams. Sequencing and omics technologies are being employed to increase our understanding of factors that determine an individual's response, and examples include cancer genomics, pharmacogenomics, and nutrigenomics. Pharmacogenomics and nutrigenomics use sequencing to provide information on how an individual's genetic makeup influences the metabolism of drugs and nutrients, respectively. Genomic information is also being used to understand and guide drug treatment options. The chapter concludes by discussing how advances in the omics sciences, biotechnology, and data science have enabled clinician-scientists to engage with patients and implement timely and effective interventions to improve patient outcomes.
