ABSTRACT

Background: Physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of death in the world. It may lead to the development of degenerative diseases. Objective: to examine the correlation of physical activity and energy balance with physical fitness among the professors of Unpad. Methods: Professors of Unpad undertook a questionnaire from ALG (Academic Leadership Grant) for 1 month. A total of 142 elderly professors (females (n = 34) and males (n = 115)) were selected in this study. They were classified into four groups: pre-elderly (≥ 50–60 years), young elderly (≥ 60–70 years), old elderly (≥ 70–80 years), and very old elderly ≥ 80 years. The professors were administered a questionnaire on physical activity that is called the GPAQ (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire), which included 24-hour food intake recall, TEE, and a physical fitness test consisting of walking in 6 minutes. Results: Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANCOVA analysis (p ≤ 0,05), and logistic regression. Conclusion: Physical activity with moderate intensity is effective for the elderly.
