ABSTRACT

Classic visualization techniques range from scatterplots, histograms, and Venn diagrams, to box plots and many statistical plots that are still in heavy use today. Modern visualization techniques are targeted towards high-dimensional data and span from parallel coordinates and self-organizing map visualizations, to principal components analysis and other methods. As Saraiya et al. pointed out in 2004 [6], there is an abundance of tools available to biologists that includes many modern visualization techniques, although their utility has been mostly reserved to visualization experts that work hand in hand with domain experts.
