ABSTRACT

Security in communications is currently a field of particular importance. As computational power increases significantly each year, the software safety measures against eavesdroppers is consistently evaluated and upgraded. Various cryptographic methods are consistently used to protect all types of data transferred through intranet and internet links. Quantum cryptography is a technique for two parties to form a key on an open optical network. Such keys can be used for the encryption of data exchanged between the two parties. In conventional optical communications a semiconductor laser generates a coherent optical carrier on which the information is encoded using various modulation schemes. In the proposed approach of the chaos-based optical communications, the semiconductor laser is driven to operate in the chaotic regime by applying a feedback loop that leads it to coherence collapse. The technology of semiconductor materials and crystals has provided with devices that are used explicitly in optical communications.
