ABSTRACT
Starting from the 1980s, communications in industrial environments progressively switched to multipoint serial digital transmissions. The advantage of such a choice is mainly twofold: rst, bundles of point-to-point analogue links were replaced by a shared communication support; second, remote conguration, management, and diagnostic operations were enabled, easily and effectively. The related solutions are usually known as the šeldbuses.
