ABSTRACT
With the application of open and standardized technologies, cyber security has become an important issue for the operation of power system. In these new technologies, IEC 61850 series standards, based on open communication protocols, are introduced as the fundamentals for control, monitoring, and automation. In this article, to present applicability of the IEC 61850, three typical application elds including substation automation system, wind power plants, and distributed energy resources (DER) are selected and described in detail. Furthermore, the features of cyber security issues including threats, requirements, attacks, and categories, are analyzed.
