ABSTRACT
Important mechanical performance criteria for large mirrors are weight, stiffness, and response to temperature changes. This chapter describes basic techniques for the design of large mirrors based on these aspects of performance. As outlined in Chapter 1 of Volume 1, it is best to utilize a three-step process to design a state-of-the-art large mirror. This process is described briefly in Section 2.4 of this chapter.
